A Rant and grumbling

I am hoping to seriously increase my savings account this year. I want to see how much I can actually put away. One big lump sum gives you *way* more options than spending in dribbles and spurts, right?

One of the girls on the Compact group is trying to save $100,000. this year. Now, that is quite a goal by anyone's standards. She has given a bunch of us the incentive to get our own savings challenge up and rolling. I did not set a number that I am trying to reach, and maybe I should have. But I know where I started and hope to add greatly to that amount.

Unfortunately, what I have been finding with my savings account is that when I reach a certain $$ amount, I have an unexpected expense of an equal value. Anyone else experience this phenomenon? It's like "oh look, $250!! Woo Hoo!" Then the mechanic says "Mrs. LisaPie, your car repair comes to $250." WTF??? And yet, that happens to me over and over. Just recently I made a good deposit to my savings account and guess what happened? RachelPie (sweet daughter in college) called me and said her car was in the shop and she needed xxx to get it fixed. So there you go.

On one hand I think well maybe I should up the savings even further, and then on the other hand my brain says well if I do that, then what huge bill am I fixing to get slapped with? Would karma do that to me?

I think I need a better attitude about this whole savings plan. Any suggestions?

  1. WOW...$100k. That would be awesome.

I definitely know what you mean about when you save, then you spend. Chris got a nice Christmas bonus, which of course never even hit the savings account...just right to the credit card bill.

One idea to trick karma is to split up your savings accounts. If you put $250 in one and $250 in another, then maybe it will be tricked and only wallop you with a $250 bill :) (I'm a big fan of Dollar Savings Direct and Emigrant Direct for savings accounts)

  2. you could get in touch with the wise practices your dad and step dad used for money saving. Or not have a daughter who is financially dependent on you... what a lameooo.

  3. I hear you on this one Lisa!
The Karma gods heard me say I saved XXX in Jan.
In the last week since publically saying what I saved, I have been hit with the yearly Municipal tax bill, the car insurance bill AND a car maintenance/repair bill for close to $800. Add that to the money we just spent to finally redo the nasty countertops in my kitchen and there goes about all of my $aving$ Challenge Money.

Don't give up though, keep plugging away at saving! Some of it is bound to stick and not get sucked back into the Universe.
