Juneteenth

I really should have posted about Juneteenth yesterday and Father's Day today.  But since I already did Father's Day, Juneteenth gets done today.

Do you know about Juneteenth?  If you live outside of Texas, there is a high probability that you do not.  Juneteenth is the shortened name for June Nineteenth.  June 19, 1865 is the day that some general rode into Texas and said, "Oh, by the by, President Lincoln freed the slaves about 3 years back.  All you slaves are free, and you slave owners, well, you better hire you some help to run your spread".

So, Juneteenth is a HUGE big deal and lots of celebrations go on.  Yet another reason to barbecue, eat lots of food and since it is smack in the middle of fruit season there are tons of peaches, watermelon, blueberries, strawberries, and so forth.

Here is a link to wikipedia that gives a more detailed background to this day.

  1. love the recap :) we missed out on the chance to celebrate yesterday! instead, we helped Miss Faith celebrate birthday #3 (for the 3rd time this week). Well, we did fire up the grill and have ice cream. I guess it could be considered a double-celebration!

    LEON=NOEL
    The 6 months before/after Christmas Day.
    In case I forget I'll wish you a very Merry Leon Day now!!!

  3. I did not know about Juneteenth. I think now I will have to celebrate, too. And since any day is a celebration if watermelon is involved, I think I will go cut a slice right now and raise my fruit to this noble day.
